Why is my shower head losing pressure? (A simple diagnostic)

Shower pressure that used to be fine has gradually gotten weaker. Or it dropped suddenly. Either way, you’re standing under a trickle wondering what changed.

There are four common causes, and you can check them in order from easiest to most involved. Most people find the problem at step one or two.

Cause 1: Blocked or scaled nozzles

This is the most common reason for gradual pressure loss. Mineral deposits build up inside the shower head nozzles over time, narrowing the openings. The water has to push through smaller gaps, so the flow feels weaker.

You’ll know this is the issue if the spray pattern has become uneven: some jets spray normally while others are weak, misdirected, or completely blocked.

The fix

Clean the shower head. If your nozzles are rubber or silicone (rub-clean jets), rub your thumb across the face to push out deposits. For harder buildup, use the vinegar bag soak: fill a plastic bag with white vinegar, secure it around the shower head, and leave it for 2–4 hours.

Cause 2: A flow restrictor

Most modern shower heads come with a built-in flow restrictor. It’s a small disc or washer inside the shower head that limits flow to 2.0 or 2.5 gallons per minute (GPM) to meet federal water efficiency standards.

If your shower head is new and the pressure feels weak from day one, the flow restrictor may be set too low for your household water pressure.

The fix

Check whether your shower head has a removable flow restrictor. It’s usually a small colored disc visible when you unscrew the head from the arm or hose. Some models allow you to remove it; others don’t. Check the manufacturer’s instructions.

Removing a flow restrictor will increase water usage. If water conservation matters to you, try cleaning the nozzles first. The restrictor may not be the problem.

Cause 3: Sediment in the shower arm

The shower arm (the pipe coming out of the wall) can accumulate sediment over time, especially in older homes or areas with aging infrastructure. Rust flakes, mineral deposits, and pipe debris collect inside the arm and restrict water flow before it even reaches the shower head.

The fix

Unscrew the shower head from the arm. Turn the water on briefly (aim the arm into the tub or a bucket) and let it flush for 10–15 seconds. If you see discolored water or debris, that’s the problem clearing itself.

If the arm is heavily blocked, you can replace it. Shower arms cost $5–15 and thread in by hand.

Cause 4: Low household water pressure

If the pressure is weak in all fixtures (not just the shower), the issue is your home’s water supply, not the shower head. This can be caused by:

  • A partially closed main shutoff valve

  • A pressure regulator set too low

  • Peak usage hours in your neighborhood (early morning, evening)

  • A supply-side issue with your water provider

The fix

Check other faucets in your home. If they’re all weak, check your main shutoff valve (make sure it’s fully open) and your pressure regulator (if you have one). If the issue persists, contact your water provider.

If you have a shower filter installed

A shower filter adds a small amount of resistance to the water path. In most cases, this is unnoticeable. But if your baseline pressure is already low, or if the filter cartridge is clogged with sediment, you may notice reduced flow.

Check the cartridge age (replace every 3–6 months), and try backwashing if pressure dropped after the filter was installed.
