How to clean a shower head: Removing limescale and keeping the jets clear

A shower head that used to spray evenly now shooting water in odd directions. Weak spots. Dead zones. Jets that drip instead of spray. The cause is almost always the same: mineral buildup inside the nozzles.

Cleaning it is straightforward, and you don’t need to remove the shower head to do it. Here’s how to get it back to full flow.

Why shower head nozzles get blocked

If you live in a hard water area, dissolved minerals (mainly calcium and magnesium) gradually deposit inside your shower head nozzles. Over time, these deposits harden into limescale, narrowing the openings and disrupting the spray pattern.

Even in softer water areas, mineral buildup happens. It just takes longer. Any shower head will need cleaning eventually.

Method 1: The daily wipe-down (prevention)

If your shower head has rubber or silicone nozzles (sometimes called rub-clean jets), you can prevent most buildup by running your thumb or a cloth across the nozzle face after each shower. The flexible material lets you push out deposits before they harden.

This takes about five seconds and dramatically reduces how often you need a deeper clean.

Method 2: The vinegar soak (deep clean without removing)

This is the go-to method for heavy buildup, and you don’t need to unscrew anything.

  1. Fill a plastic bag with white vinegar. Enough to fully submerge the shower head face.

  2. Secure the bag around the shower head with a rubber band or twist tie. Make sure the nozzles are submerged.

  3. Leave it for 2–4 hours. For heavy limescale, overnight works better.

  4. Remove the bag and run the shower on full for 30 seconds to flush loosened deposits.

  5. If any nozzles are still blocked, use a toothpick or safety pin to clear them individually.

White vinegar (5% acidity) is strong enough to dissolve limescale without damaging chrome, brushed nickel, or plastic finishes. Do not use undiluted vinegar on oil-rubbed bronze or matte black finishes for extended periods. Dilute 50/50 with water and limit the soak to 30 minutes for these finishes.

Method 3: Remove and soak (for heavy buildup)

If the vinegar bag method isn’t enough, removing the shower head gives you better access.

  1. Unscrew the shower head from the arm (hand-tight should do it; use a cloth-wrapped wrench if it’s stuck).

  2. Submerge the head face-down in a bowl of white vinegar for 4–8 hours.

  3. Scrub the nozzle face with an old toothbrush to dislodge softened deposits.

  4. Flush the head under running water from the back (opposite to normal flow) to push debris out through the nozzles.

  5. Reattach to the shower arm. Check the washer and reapply plumber’s tape if needed.

How often should you clean your shower head?

  • Hard water areas (above 120 mg/L): A vinegar soak every 4–6 weeks, or whenever you notice uneven spray.

  • Moderate water areas: Every 2–3 months.

  • Soft water areas: Every 6 months or as needed.

  • Rub-clean nozzles: Daily wipe is usually sufficient. Vinegar soak only when needed.

What not to use

  • Bleach or harsh chemical cleaners. They can damage finishes and rubber nozzles.

  • Abrasive scrubbing pads. They scratch chrome and nickel.

  • Boiling water. It can warp plastic components and damage seals.
