Why a TDS Meter won’t tell you if your shower filter is working

You installed a shower filter. You bought a TDS meter to test whether it’s doing anything. You tested the water before and after the filter and got… the same number. Or close to it.

Before you write a negative review, here’s what’s happening: the TDS meter is working correctly. Your filter is probably working correctly too. They’re just measuring different things.

What a TDS meter actually measures

TDS stands for Total Dissolved Solids. A TDS meter measures the electrical conductivity of water and converts that reading into an estimated concentration of dissolved mineral salts (calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium).

That’s it. Dissolved mineral salts. Nothing else.

A TDS meter does not detect:

  • Chlorine

  • Chloramine

  • Heavy metals at trace levels (lead, mercury, copper, chromium)

  • Trihalomethanes (THMs)

  • Organic impurities

  • Sediment (unless the particles are dissolved, not suspended)

These are exactly the contaminants a shower filter is designed to reduce.

Why the TDS reading doesn’t change

A shower filter reduces chlorine, heavy metals, sediment, and organic impurities. It does not reduce dissolved minerals like calcium and magnesium, because shower filters are not water softeners.

Since a TDS meter only measures dissolved minerals, the reading stays the same before and after the filter. The filter is doing its job. The meter just can’t see it.

A TDS meter showing no change after a shower filter is not evidence the filter isn’t working. It’s evidence that the filter isn’t removing dissolved minerals, which it was never designed to do.

What to use instead

Chlorine test strips

Chlorine test strips are the simplest way to verify your shower filter is reducing chlorine. They’re inexpensive (usually $5–10 for a pack), easy to use, and give you a visible color comparison.

  1. Fill a glass with unfiltered water (from a faucet without a filter, or before the filter is installed).

  2. Dip a test strip. Note the color.

  3. Fill a second glass with filtered water.

  4. Dip a fresh strip. Compare the colors.

You should see a clear difference: the filtered sample will show a lower chlorine reading.

Observable signs

Beyond test strips, there are signs you can observe over the first week or two:

  • Reduced chlorine smell in the shower

  • Skin feels less tight or dry after showering

  • Hair feels softer or less straw-like

  • Scalp itchiness or flakiness begins to improve

  • Color-treated hair holds its color longer

These changes are gradual. Some people notice a difference from the first shower. For others, it takes a week or two as hair and skin adjust to the change in water quality.

The bottom line on TDS meters

TDS meters are useful tools for measuring mineral content. They’re not the right tool for testing a shower filter. If you want to verify filtration performance, chlorine test strips are the accurate, inexpensive option.
