Why your shower filter might not be working (and how to find out)

You installed a shower filter expecting to notice a difference. Your skin was going to feel softer. Your hair was going to look healthier. Something was going to change.

And then… nothing obvious happened.

Before you assume the filter is faulty, there are two common reasons this happens. Neither means the filter is broken. Understanding them can save you frustration and help you figure out the right next step.

Reason 1: Your water already has low chlorine levels

Shower filters are designed to reduce chlorine. If your water supply already has low chlorine levels (below 0.5 mg/L), there’s less for the filter to reduce. The water going in is similar to the water coming out, and you won’t notice a dramatic change.

This isn’t a fault with the filter. It’s a sign that chlorine wasn’t the source of whatever symptom prompted you to try a filter.

How to check

Look up your city’s annual water quality report (Consumer Confidence Report). It lists the disinfectant type and concentration. If chlorine is below 0.5 mg/L, your water is already on the low end.

Reason 2: Your water uses chloramine, not chlorine

This is the more common and less obvious cause. Chloramine (chlorine combined with ammonia) is increasingly used by US water utilities. It’s more stable than chlorine, which is good for the water system but harder for standard shower filter media to reduce.

If your water uses chloramine, a standard shower filter will reduce some of it, but not as effectively as it reduces chlorine. The result: you may still smell or feel the disinfectant in your water after installing the filter.

How to check

Your water quality report will list the disinfectant type. If it says “chloramine” or “monochloramine,” that’s your answer.

How to test whether your filter is actually working

Method 1: Chlorine test strips

The most direct test. Test a sample of unfiltered water and a sample of filtered water with chlorine test strips. If the filtered sample shows a lower chlorine reading, the filter is working.

Strips cost $5–10 and are available at most pool supply stores or online.

Method 2: The smell test

If you can smell chlorine in your unfiltered water (that chemical, pool-like smell), run the shower through your filter and check again. A working filter should noticeably reduce or eliminate the smell.

This only works if your chlorine levels are high enough to produce a detectable smell. Below about 1.0 mg/L, most people can’t smell it.

Method 3: The vacation test

If your skin and hair feel better when you shower somewhere else (a hotel, a friend’s house, a gym), your home water quality is the variable. Install a filter and see if you get the same improvement at home.

A TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) meter measures dissolved minerals, not chlorine. If you’ve tested before and after with a TDS meter and seen no change, that’s expected. The filter reduces chlorine and contaminants, not dissolved minerals.

When to try a different filter

If your water uses chloramine and you’re using an SF100 or SF220, the SF400 may be a better match for your water chemistry. If you’re in a heavy sediment area and the cartridge is clogging quickly, the SF500 with its external sediment guards may extend performance.

The right filter depends on what’s in your water, not just on the filter’s spec sheet.

A note on expectations

Some people notice a difference from the first shower. For others, the change is gradual. Hair and skin take time to adjust to a change in water quality. Give it a week or two of consistent use before drawing a conclusion.
